Derrybrack Aubracs is a family run farm owned by Joseph Cunnane and his eldest daughter Catherina located in Derrybrack,Kilkelly, Co. Mayo, consisting of a suckler and drystock production enterprise.
Our herd of Aubracs was established in 2010, after purchasing a number of Aubrac Crossbred Commercial heifers at our local livestock mart. We were initially introduced to the Aubrac breed by Mr Francis Donohoe of Johnstown Aubracs, who at this stage had been breeding Aubracs for six years.
Our herd began to expand, with the addition of several Pedigree Cows and Heifers, alongside sourcing a top-quality Stockbull from the herd of Francis Donohoe.
In 2011, Catherina, won an Aubrac Crossbred Commercial heifer in the Farmers Journal Heifer & Hogget competition at the Tullamore Show and we then went on to join the Society in November of that year.
Our herd has since expanded and we are very impressed with the overall performance of the Aubrac Breed.
From our experience of the breed, we strongly believe that they tick every box in terms of both maternal and terminal qualities- profitability, fertility, longevity, docility, motherly abilities and their excellent kill-out results consistently grading U’s and E’s and the high capability of meeting beef factory specifications, with high demands for all markets, including export.
We have a calf to beef enterprise production system in place. All bull calves are slaughtered under 16 Months in our local factory, fetching top prices available with excellent kill-out results.
Sample Kill-out Results:
We retain our best heifers to increase the overall genetic merit of our suckler herd. The remaining number of heifers are slaughtered at an average of 22 months and are sold to the factory or butcher.
Over the next number of year, it is our main objective to focus on our Maternal Beef Breeding Programme, with involves the use of French AI, as part of the Irish Aubrac Society Breed Development Programme.
We have also purchased a second stockbull from Johnstown Aubracs, sired by French AI Drakkar, a relatively new bloodline.
