Some AI companies have recently shown interest in possibly purchasing a young Aubrac bull to take semen from and distribute it at bull of the day price.

The Irish Aubrac Society would like to put together a list of possible bulls that might suit these AI companies. We are asking breeders to put forward only 1 bull in their herd that they think could be suitable.

This animal must fit the following criteria.

  • The bull must not have covered cows
  • He must be born between the 1st of January 2015 and 28th of February 2016
  • He must be 4 or 5 stars in replacement index
  • He must be 3 or 4 stars minimum in terminal index
  • Calving difficulty must be under 5 %
  • He must be docile
  • Dam must have good milk and calving interval

If you think you have a bull that could be suitable, please detach the bottom of this page and return to the Society’s office  (Irish Aubrac Society ; Deerpark Farm Services ; Carrick On Suir ; Co. Tipperrary) no later than November the 15th  2016. Alternately you can email the tag number of the animal to Angela Lacey (angela.lacey@deerparkfarmservices.com) by the same date. Only bulls put forward in writing will be accepted.

Should you wish to have more information, please call James Donnellan (Chairman) on 086 8379057 or Mireille McCall (Secretary) on 086 3451373.

‘Aubrac bringing strong display of both pedigree and commercial stock’

The Aubrac society is bringing a strong display of both pedigree and commercial stock to show how it can tick the boxes across a number of sectors, writes Shane Murphy of the Irish Farmers Journal.

At this year’s Ploughing, the Irish Aubrac Cattle Society will have a very impressive line-up of cattle on display. The society and its breeders will be displaying dairy cross cattle at the stand to show the benefits from using an Aubrac bull on the dairy herd.

With the recent rise in new dairy entrants and expanding cow numbers in the dairy industry, the society feels this is an area where the breed can play a huge role in helping not only the farmer meet market specifications and requirements but also helping the processors receive animals with the desired grades and fat scores.

The Aubrac breed’s main attributes consist of ease of calving and calf vigour coupled with the animal’s ease of finishing and good grade scores. The society and its members feel that the breed is a very effective alternative to some of the traditional breeds currently chosen for dairy herds.

Show winners

The major show winners from around the countryside will be on display for the public to view. This will provide spectators with a good chance to view pedigree Aubrac cows, heifers and bulls.

The society will also be highlighting throughout the three-day event the benefits which the Aubrac cattle have to offer in relation to the introduction of the new Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP).

Following the ICBF genetic evaluations and scoring, the Aubrac breed as a whole has scored very well with the highest-ranked pedigree cow having a five-star replacement index of €251. This highlights the benefits which the breed can offer to the beef industry in Ireland.

The society will also be holding a free draw offering those in attendance the chance to win a pedigree registered Aubrac maiden heifer, so be sure to call.

Ploughing 2016: Irish Aubrac Society

Ploughing 2016 is upon us, with all roads leading to Tullamore, Co. Offaly  once again.
With both pedigree and Aubrac commercial cattle on display, this year our exhibition will focus the role Aubrac cattle can play in a dairy farming enterprise and the benefits they have in relation to the BDGP.

Experienced breeders and our council members will be on hand in order to discuss the characteristics and merits of the Aubrac breed, along with providing breeding advice and any other queries that you may have.
One of our highlights is of course the 5 star Pedigree Registered Aubrac heifer that is up for grabs as part of our raffle, with lines available to purchase over the three day period, for €2 per line, 3 lines for €5 and a full card of 30 lines for €50.
The lucky winner will be drawn on Thursday at 4pm in our tent.

You’ll find us at Block 2 Row 16 Stand 357!
